If you are a current Windows 2003 MCSA, you will be able to transition your certification to Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator with four exams. If you are a current Windows 2003 MCSE, you will require only three exams to achieve Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator.

The new generation of Microsoft certifications

With the release of Vista, Microsoft introduced a new and much more streamlined certification structure which emphasizes primary skill sets and job roles. This new structure always begins with a core certification known as MCTS, (Microsoft certified technology specialist), followed by a more specific and comprehensive set of skills known as MCITP, (Microsoft certified IT professional). This structure is being applied to all new Windows product lines including Server 2008.

In the case of Server 2008, there are two MCITP certifications, Server Administrator and Enterprise Administrator. As an option, you could take one additional exam, Exam 70-646. to add the MCITP: Server Administrator credential to the rest of the certifications. It would not matter if you were upgrading from MCSA or MCSE, the exam would still apply. This is something to consider since we would have already covered the material to prepare you for that exam. It is strictly an option though.

MCTS and MCITP Certification

The Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist certification is used to identify both core and job specific skills. In the case of Windows Server 2008, there are three MCTS certifications in addition to Windows Vista MCTS. In these camps you will focus on skills and exam preparation for multiple MCTS certifications.

The Microsoft Certified IT Professional certification builds on the job specific MCTS certifications with role specific skill sets. In the case of Server 2008, there are two MCITP certifications that allow you to further define your area of expertise. The combination of MCTS certifications which are skills specific and MCTIP certification which is role specific allow you to clearly identify your specific strengths.

If you wish to follow either of the upgrade paths listed above it is important that you have been working with Windows Server 2003 on a regular basis as an administrator, not just as an end user. If you have not, or if you do not hold a current MCSA or MCSE certification for Windows Server 2003, it would be best to follow our full bootcamp that does not rely so heavily on past experience.
